What To Do After A Car Accident

Auto Insurance AgencyA car accident always comes as an unfortunate surprise and can be traumatic. It can be hard to think clearly right after the accident occurs.

Here are some tips to help you at the scene of the accident

  1. Depending on the severity, immediately have someone call 911 for emergency services.
  2. Even in the event of a fender bender, call the police and have them complete a police report. This is important because it documents when, where and how the accident occurred. This detailed report helps determine the extent to which parties were at fault and is important when settling your insurance claim.
  3. If you’re uninjured and are able to take photos of the scene, this could prove helpful. Safety first, make sure you are in a safe area and not in jeopardy of being injured by passing cars.
  4. In a minor accident where both parties seem amicable, exchange insurance and contact information. You should still call the police to have the police report prepared. Often the parties involved become less amicable once repair bills start coming in.
  5. Call your insurance broker. We can often help you in a number of ways including alerting your carrier and walking you through the next steps to follow. Your insurance broker can also help you decide whether to file a claim or pay the loss out-of-pocket. Frequent claims, even smaller ones, can lead to increased premiums and even policy cancellation.
